Marcus Fenix and Epic Games only needed a week to overthrow Pokemon Black and White as the best video game launch of 2011, with over three million copies sold in just a week's time.

Gears of War 3 Sells 3 Million, Beats Pokemon as Biggest 2011 Game

Chalk up another kill for Marcus Fenix and the COGs, as Gears of War 3 has reportedly sold a staggering three million copies in just a week -- dethroning Pokemon Black and Pokemon White as the best launch in video games of 2011 right now.

Of course, that's probably only counting America, where the Xbox 360 does especially well, and where Pokemon Black and White debuted five months after the original Japanese version. Still, Gears of War 3 has done exceptionally well, despite lower average critic scores than Gears of War 2 -- of course, getting out ahead of Battlefield 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and other big-budget titles definitely helped. VGChartz also reports that this marks a 50% increase in opening sales over Gears of War 2, a remarkable feat considering how well the previous title did in late 2008, right before the worst of the worldwide economic recession in that same year.

UK publication Metro also reports that Gears of War 3 did quite well in Europe, as the region's 7th best Xbox 360 launch and "12th biggest individual format launch on any format in the UK." We'll see how the game stacks up to FIFA 12 next month, as the franchise is immensely more popular in that region. Don't be surprised at a quick upset, if it happens.
