Only seven percent of those surveyed by BitDefender use any security solution for their Facebook profiles, despite the fact that 87 percent have seen postings that look like rogue applications.

BitDefender had surveyed 2,713 people between the ages of 18 and 65, and qualified that this doesn’t count as a representative sample for the entire social network.

Across this group, the average friend count was 137. And 83 percent of the contacts were a combination of current and former colleagues — either school or work.

Interestingly, the average user surveyed characterizes 42 percent of their friend lists as people they don’t actually know. That helps explain why 89 percent of respondents have either casually ignored posts or specifically hidden them.

The closeness of that percentage to the figure for those who don’t use security says a lot about people’s priorities. In a way, not looking at every single posting by all contacts resembles not using security if you consider that both partly result from not slowing down to look at everything on the site. Who has time for it all anymore?

Readers, what do you think of this latest set of statistics from BitDefender?
