Vocus bought North Social’s software to build its own Facebook page, and liked the product so much it acquired the company for $7 million — plus the promise to pay up to $18 million in two years if certain performance metrics.

This is the fifth acquisition Vocus has made in the past year, bringing the company up to 650 employees globally. During the first quarter, Vocus bought Datapress in France and BDL Media in China; in the second quarter, Vocus acquired Help a Reporter Out, and earlier this month Vocus acquired Engine 140.

The pace of acquisitions fits into a larger pattern of mergers and acquisitions among startups that specialize in creating Facebook pages.

North Social offers 19 different applications for social media promotions, and apparently signed 1,300 different monthly subscribers just in the last month. The five-person company has headquarters in Oakland and will remain there for now.

What do you think about how Vocus is positioned to compete with other providers in this space?
