Less than an hour ago we were invited to an event this Wednesday at Facebook’s headquarters. While we weren’t told what the announcement would be about, Kara Swisher suggests that the announcement should be about the company’s impending location product. We wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case given all the hype surrounding the impending product. With Google ramping up efforts to take on Facebook, Facebook is batten down the hatches by pushing out product updates, acquiring companies, and apparently launching a new product.
The latest rumors suggest that Facebook will most likely launch location as a feature within the Platform, enabling developers to add geo-location data to applications. Last we we reported that Facebook’s location products were imminent and now it appears to be confirmed. Enabling developers to tie into the Platform and serve location-aware information, will not only enable Facebook to improve the relevance of the stream, but also enable the company to improve ad targeting. Given that the invites are now going out for Wednesday’s press event, it’s clear that the location announcement is in fact imminent. We look forward to learning more on Wednesday!
