Cliff Blezinski was willing to bring the Halo star into his bloody franchise, but Bungie wasn't ready.

Why Master Chief Never Made a Gears of War Cameo

Halo's Master Chief was a lot closer to appearing in a Gear of War game than you might've ever guessed. Speaking with Complex, Epic's creative director Cliff Blezinski explained:

"I'll let you in on a secret. I actually approached Microsoft on getting Master Chief into the game, but those guys are kind of squeamish. One of Halo's successes is that it's a soft M [rating]. Gears pushes it further. I'm creatively comfortable with that, though it can limit what you do. If you had to break it down, I'd say that Gears is like Mortal Kombat and Halo is like Street Fighter."

Cliff then goes on to explain how he'd put the Halo mascot in a COG suit and blow him up. "We'd have to see what his head looks like being blown to smithereens or how his arm would look getting sawed off. Then we'd package up the test footage, put it on YouTube, and let the fans get a kick out of it because everything is meta these days."

Though there's even less chance of a crossover now, it would've been fun fan service to bring the two monster franchises together. But Gears' characters did appear in Lost Planet 2, so this probably won't be the last we hear of some big names popping up in a Gears game...or maybe even Marcus Fenix making a cameo somewhere else.
