Don’t give advice on Facebook how to enter Egypt’s armed services, unless you want to spend six months in jail and pay a fine.

That’s the sentence 30-year-old Ahmed Hassan Bassyouni got from an Egyptian military court, the man’s lawyer, Gamal Eid, told AFP.

Bassyouni — whose name has a different spelling from one media outlet to the next — didn’t even say anything negative about the military. He simply gave advice on how to enlist and prepare the requisite documents.

Like his attorney told AFP:

This is a message that publishing anything about the armed forces, whether good or bad, won’t be allowed. They accused him of spreading military secrets over the Internet without permission.

Perhaps Egypt’s military has security concerns in mind when reacting to online posts by residents of the country.

In March, an Egyptian military court tried student blogger Ahmed Abdel Fattah Mustafa for criticizing the country’s armed forces. The case adjourned and has yet to resume, according to Reporters Without Borders.

Another Egyptian blogger, Kareem Amer, just finished a four-year term in jail, on charges of insulting Islam and President Hosni Mubarak.

Arrested while still a student, 26-year-old Amer was Egypt’s first blogger to face trial for online postings, the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information told Reuters.

Egyptian law gets pretty strict about anything that might bear a resemblance to terrorism, and the nation’s legal system seems to regard online communications as a frontier.

What can Egyptian users of Facebook do to keep their postings from causing further legal problems with local officials? Should the social network take more steps to help ensure that members in conservative nations encounter less conflict related to posts and profiles?

EA is taking direct aim at the racing sim crowd with its recently-revealed Shift 2: Unleashed. We asked our Twitter followers to pinpoint other series that are under siege from direct competitors.

Spurned by our recent look at the upcoming Gran Turismo competitor Shift 2, we polled our 22,000-plus Twitter followers to find out what other formerly dominant franchises are now vulnerable. Here's the question we posed:

We just previewed Shift 2, a game aiming to beat Gran Turismo. What other top franchises are in danger? Best replies posted, one wins swag.less than a minute ago via TweetDeckGamePro
GamePro

Two particular franchises seemed to garner the most discussion. The lack of recent GTA developments and Rockstar's subsequent projects have caused a lot of doubt regarding that franchises future. Assassin's Creed was also cited often, but for the opposite reason:

@gamepro Grand Theft Auto being beaten by L.A. Noire. Linear, story-driven, ripped-from-the-headlines beats repetitive fetch quests.less than a minute ago via webJosh Isom

@GamePro I would have to say that honestly, Assassin's Creed could very well topple the GTA franchise re: open-world games & story.less than a minute ago via webFoxsnipe

@Gamepro Apparently CoD is in danger since there's a new Assassins Creed releasing every 15 min.less than a minute ago via webChristen

@GamePro Assassins Creed, if they start pumping them out at 1 per year, then the series could get to diluted and lose its appeal.less than a minute ago via webElliott Palmer

While those two franchises are seen as the most vulnerable by our Twitter community, a handful of other series were mentioned. Here's the best of the rest:

@GamePro I'd say one of the top franchises in danger is Guitar Hero. Rock Band is blowing them out, and sales are god awful.less than a minute ago via webCameron Arruda

@GamePro I think Vanquish is miles ahead of Gears of War and is a much better third person shooter.less than a minute ago via TweetDeckDafishies

@GamePro God of War doesn't hold a candle to Bayonetta, and Bayonetta 2 is being hinted and rumored a crazy amountless than a minute ago via TweetDeckSkram

Even though the two games are coming from the same publisher, we're awarding our top tweet to Isom405, who noted how even an inter-company project can steal thunder from a sister series. Congrats, Isom--please send a direct message to GamePro on Twitter before the publication of tomorrow's "Tell us how you really feel" article and we'll send you some swag from our office.

Gamers may be amongst the most sequel-friendly crowd, but franchises need to tread lightly when presenting frequent iterations. A careful balance needs to be drawn between long waits and short turnarounds, between catering to fans of the original and presenting new ideas for neophytes. With new development talent constantly coming into the industry, there's no shortage of competitors looking to dehtrone the kings.

What do you think of the replies above? Is there anything you'd like to add to the conversation? Please continue the chatter by responding in the comment section below or by replying to GamePro on Twitter.

It has a new name, new graphics and different gameplay. But FarmVillage is still at its core FarmVille, a game that Zynga hopes will fill Japan with virtual cornstalks and cows.

Zynga is launching FarmVillage tonight in Japan on Mixi, the Japanese social network that’s partially owned by Zynga investor Softbank. Unlike the Facebook or iDevice version of the game, FarmVillage is built for feature phones, which are what most of Mixi’s userbase has.

The result looks a bit different from what you may be used to. Aside from a more compact layout for the smaller screen, and lack of a player avatar, there’s also a distinctly Asian feel to the art:

Softbank’s $147 million investment in Zynga came this June, and Zynga’s buyout of Japanese developer Unoh followed in August. Like Zynga’s other moves this year, its first Japanese release was fairly slow in coming since the company initially expressed serious interest in Japan.

But Zynga’s best growth prospects probably lie overseas, so we’re likely to see more launches of this sort fairly soon. Mixi offers access to only 20 million users, which is smaller than four of Zynga’s games on Facebook, but its members are known to monetize extremely well.
