Well-known fansite The Metroid Database has just revealed a new Metroid fan game: Minitroid, a very low-res version of Metroid that's more of an experiment than anything (its creators call it a "tech demo"), but is no less playable than the real thing. It's kind of impressively detailed, too, with full color and environmental effects evocative of Super Metroid. It's a Windows game, and is good for a few minutes of fun.
