On May 16, the city’s planning commission will give feedback on Facebook’s environmental impact report for the proposed architectural changes to the company’s future headquarters in Menlo Park.
The San Jose Mercury News reports that Facebook’s plans call for the ability to put up to 9,400 employees in 79 acres that Menlo Park had limited to 3,600 workers when Sun Microsystems bought the land and sought permission for renovations.
The staffing limit has to do with traffic concerns, but Facebook’s environmental impact report include a proposal to limit the number of vehicle trips to and from the area to 15,000 per day. This will involve free shuttle service, a standard park among technology companies in Silicon Valley.
Facebook’s plans call for a 57-acre east campus and a 22-acre west campus, separated by the Bayfront Expressway. That part of the plan doesn’t diverge much from what the company had initially announced upon confirming the move to Menlo Park. But the staffing goal for the facilities is more than triple what had previously been disclosed. However, that trajectory does jibe with the rate that Facebook is growing, so it makes sense to factor that into the plans.
