In its second year, the video-game convention based in Cologne, Germany, recorded more than 250,000 in attendance. This makes Gamescom the most-attended game show in the world.
The recently completed Gamescom video-game trade recorded a 9 percent spike in attendance from the previous year. More than 254,000 people walked through the show's doors in Cologne, Germany. This makes Gamescom the most-attended video-game show in the world in just its second year.
You might think E3 is crowded, but Gamecom's numbers dwarf the attendance figures from shows in the United States. E3 racked up 46,500 visitors. That's down from a high of more than 70,000 in 2005, when event organizer the Entertainment Software Association took measures to reduce crowds. The 2009 Tokyo Game Show recorded a little more than 180,000 visitors last year, a slight downtick from its 2008 attendance figures.
While not trade shows, the Penny Arcade conventions can't compare with Gamescom's numbers. In its inaugural convention, PAX East topped 50,000. More than 60,000 people were at PAX's Seattle-based show last year, and expectations are for similar numbers to show up for this year's show. The 2010 edition of PAX kicks off Sept. 3.
