With more news coming today signaling the end of Guitar Hero's reign, we decided to ask the community what they think will happen to the music genre as a whole. Here's what they had to say.
Yesterday, we learned that Activision was planning on ceasing new releases of Guitar Hero games and dismantling its business unit. Today, we learned the changes are even more drastic and that the game will have no new DLC after February. With that in mind, we put the following question to the music-gamers of the world:
Guitar Hero's cancellation fallout continues. How do you think the music genre will change without the industry giant? Best answers posted.less than a minute ago via TweetDeckGamePro

A few fans think that the move may be a death knell for the genre as a whole. Here are the folks who think music games may not enjoy an encore for quite some time:
@GamePro this is the direct result of over-saturation. It's a novelty item. Fad is over.less than a minute ago via Osfoora for iPhoneGideon™

@GamePro I think the music game genre is like Disney movies, tamogachi and chia pets. There will be a new group of customers every 7 years.less than a minute ago via TweetDeckRichard Pippy

A surprisingly large amount think that band and instrument-based games might make way for more experimental kinds of music games. Here are the folks that think elimination might bring about innovation:
@GamePro It will change by retrograding back to its pre-GH niche of DDR & Beatmania. A tepid economy lends little hope of a resurgence.less than a minute ago via webg. egret

@GamePro It's not like the genre was gone before Guitar Hero. I predict more Mad Maestro and Gitaroo Man style games. Perhaps Amplitude 2.less than a minute ago via webCameron Litland

@GamePro Snarky response: 8 less yearly releases. Real response: we'll see less music games overall, but there might be more dance games.less than a minute ago via webAlexander Scott

While a few responses exhibited apathy towards the future of music games, the fact that many fans continue to support Harmonix and Rock Band while also looking back at more experimental music games with fondness certainly reflects the need for new music-focused game experiences. You may not see a new plastic guitar on store shelves for quite some time, but the fans aren't done rocking by any measure.
