Scott Pilgrim IconBooya Media claims to have created the first webcam game embedded within a Facebook profile,  but it’s actually a page promoting the home video release of Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World by NBC Universal.

I think the cleverest part of this promotion is the strong brand association: Popping bubbles with images of Ramona’s evil exes mirrors the movie’s general theme. In the flick itself, Scott Pilgrim has to contend with said exes — actually, they’re a “league of evil exes.” And he has to defeat them all, including a set of twins and ninja-girl from a bi-curious phase.

The game seems like a lot of extra gimmickry for something that ought to just sell itself. The movie got four stars from a couple of major reviewers. Frankly, every flick Michael Cera appears in cracks me up, even though I’m almost twice his age.

Perhaps if I were younger, like around the same age as the characters in the movie, I would say that playing the Booya app motivates me to buy a copy of the Scott Pilgrim flick so I can watch it over and over again. However, the eight video links already available on this Facebook page more strongly influence my desire to catch this flick I completely missed when it passed through movie theaters. I replayed them more times than the game.

Anyway, I wonder whether  Booya and NBC Universal are already planning to rejigger this app for other shows and movies, because the game looks like the first manifestation of an ongoing deal.
